Job Title:          DesignSpecialist – Geotechnical

Level:                3 or 4

Reporting:       Director – Geotechnical Engineering and/or SeniorDesign Specialist

Position Description: Providecritical geotechnical engineering analysis and input to perform technicalreviews, mitigate potential design risk, identify and solve constructionchallenges, and generate optimization opportunities for pursuit and executionof design-build and design-bid-build system projects.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:             

  • Perform technical reviews of projects to assess constructability, examine design details, and recommend construction sequencing and logistics as related to geotechnical work.
  • Review and evaluate project specific designs related to geotechnical work, program intent, contractual obligations, division of responsibilities, and deliverables.
  • Review and assess the following project documentation with respect to geotechnical engineering and geotechnical earthquake engineering: geotechnical engineering reports, seismic hazard reports, drawings, basis of design documents, specifications, calculations, and shop drawings.
  • Analyze elements of subsurface investigations, laboratory testing, geotechnical analyses, geotechnical recommendations, foundation systems, ground improvement, grading, hardscape/paving/floor slab support, and temporary construction systems (excavation support, dewatering, underpinning, etc.) developed to date, evaluate sufficiency of design, and identify means of optimizing geotechnical design and construction components.
  • Propose potential solutions to the design/construction team for design optimization, risk management challenges, and constructability improvements.
  • Provide review and guidance for project non-conformances and operations issues with respect to geotechnical aspects of projects.
  • Document geotechnical review activities in formal report formats, technical memoranda, Bluebeam Studio sessions, spreadsheet-based comment lists, and/or emails.
  • Establish constructive and effective relationships with internal project team members to facilitate understanding and influence design and project development.
  • Partner with linked design disciplines, e.g. structural, civil, architecture, code-compliance, building envelope and façade, MEFP, vertical transportation, acoustics, and fire to improve the coordination of design concepts.
  • May perform other duties as necessary or assigned


  • Qualifications: B.S. in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical) required, M.S preferred with fourto ten years of industry experience as a practicing Geotechnical Engineer or anequivalent combination of education, training and/or experience; must belicensed as a Professional Engineer.  Must have the ability to think and write in a highly structured mannerwhile also having the required creativity to develop specialized solutions andanticipating potential challenges and opportunities.  Enjoy working in an interdisciplinary teamenvironment.  Must have design experienceon a diverse array of projects through all phases of design and construction.Experience with peer reviews and/or due diligence studies. Projects will belocated throughout the U.S and approximately 25% travel is expected. Experiencewith U.S. building design codes and material specific standards. Goodunderstanding of structural mechanics and structural engineering principles isrequired.  Must have significantdemonstrated skills in utilization of geotechnical software (such as LPILE,Slide7, Settle3D, Plaxis, FLAC, Shoring Suite, CPe-IT, MathCAD, etc.), generalcollaboration software (e.g. Bluebeam Studio). Able to effectively and clearlycommunicate in a professional environmental via verbal and written means.Knowledge of geotechnical and foundation system costs. Continued development ofexpertise and awareness of innovations in the industry. Experience with seismichazard analysis and construction vibrations is a big plus.
