About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Civil Managing Quantity Surveyor to join our Regional team to work across sites based in Coventry City Centre.

Role Purpose

A Managing Quantity Surveyor is a very experienced QS who manages all costs relating on civil engineering projects or on a number of smaller ones, from the initial calculations to the final figures. They will have significant experience in minimising the costs of a project and enhancing value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality. Typically they will have a track record of managing a commercial team and be a Chartered Member of the RICS, ICES or CIOB, and a mentor to other commercial staff on their journey to becoming professionally qualified.

Project is a GBP20 million new build road, NEC 4 form of contract and a design and build project



What you'll be doing

As a Civil Managing Quantity Surveyor, your main responsibilities are as follows:

  • Has a good knowledge of and adheres to the Companys GMCEs, BMS and other governance
  • Ability to mitigate potentially damaging situations
  • Communicate the good things Cost
  • Applies principles of cost management & elemental cost analysis including life cycle implications where required
  • Recognises and understands cost sensitive areas
  • Undertakes risk analysis in the context of construction
  • Manage the preparation of Target Costs
  • Reviews progress of the project against the various programmes
  • Preparation of delay and disruption programmes
  • Monitors & controls critical elements of the process
  • Identifies & communicates threats to budget & programme
  • Report and explain the commercial progress to senior project staff
  • Cost Planning and pre-contract cost control
  • Manages commercial aspects with Customer and Stakeholders for their area of responsibility
  • Evaluate and negotiate tenders including Subcontractors and suppliers
  • Assess and identify risks and opportunities as part of risk management
  • Manages customer and stakeholder management for their area of responsibility
  • Risk and opportunity analysis
  • Advising and contractual matters and formulating correspondence
  • Undertakes benchmarking exercises & sets / monitors Performance indicators (KPI)
  • Maximises digital opportunities
  • Maintains own Personal Development Plan
  • Manages HR/People aspects for direct and indirect reports (PDRs etc)
  • Targets work opportunities or activities that can develop individuals
  • Actively supports the development of others incl professional mentoring
  • Manages recruitment of lower grades up to QS


Who we're looking for

The following qualifications are essential:

  • BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying or experience equivalent
  • Membership of RICS, ICES or CIOB
  • Previous experience working on NEC form of contract and civil projects
