About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Project Manager to join our Rail team to work in Raynesway, Derby.

Role Purpose

To lead and manage the signalling and telecoms project team minor works within the LNE route and surrounding area

What you'll be doing

As a Project Manager, your main responsibilities are as follows:

  • To safely deliver signalling, telecoms and LV (signalling power alterations and points heating) works associated with minor works framework and other projects in the region of the Span of Control
  • Win work within Minor Works contract area within the Span of Control
  • To deliver the works described above to time and budget
  • Project reporting and team briefings
  • Work with other areas of the Signalling Delivery Unit (especially within the adjacent Minor Works area) to symbiotically support each other in terms of resources and improvements during peaks and troughs of work across contracts
  • Feedback and symbiotic support across contracts
  • Deliver work safely, to time and to high standards of quality in line with the Gated Lifecycle process
  • Build, grow, motivate, inspire, lead and sustain the operational teams (including supply chain where necessary) to support the delivery of the works
  • Understanding of applicable legislation, national and client standards framework
  • Ensure all projects are delivered to a high standard of technical integrity
  • An understanding of the various delivery methods for minor and complex works

Who we're looking for

The following qualities and experience are essential:

  • Numerate and literate
  • Good computer operating skills with knowledge of all Microsoft Office packages
  • Ability to drive
  • Good management, leadership and communication skills
  • Skilled in collaborative working
  • Open to travel within the role predominantly with the area as defined within the Span of Control
  • Be confident and comfortable in front of clients and working on client premises
  • Self-starter, motivated and an excellent work ethic
  • Minor works (maintenance, spot renewals)
  • Valid PTS with AC/DC
  • APM membership
  • Extensive knowledge of railway signalling systems and sub-systems project delivery and engineering assurance
  • Knowledge of appropriate industry standards relating to signalling and telecoms works
  • >10 years experience in project management in signalling & telecoms within rail
  • Awareness of principles of risk assessment
  • Good knowledge of health, safety, quality & environmental standards
  • Application of CDM Regulations

The following qualities and experience are desirable:

  • Business and management acumen
  • Understanding of different signalling and telecoms products covering interlockings, train detection, control and indications, transmission systems and power systems
  • Understanding of permanent way engineering and its impact on signalling, telecoms and power
  • Chartered Engineer of IET and/or IRSE
  • Basic Signalling technology (BST)
  • MSc or BSc
  • Emergency first aid
  • Awareness of principles of risk assessment
  • Basic knowledge of health, safety, quality & environmental standards
