The Role

We are looking to recruit a Senior Highways Design Engineer for the Area 14 Design Services Contract. In this role you will work within the Highways Design team and alongside our Client Highways England. As a Senior Highways Design Engineer you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of highways schemes and take the lead on a number of projects. With a growing team of 30+ staff, we work collaboratively with Highways England in a shared office space in Darlington, working flexibly around our core hours of 10-3 with agile working possible.

In a typical week you will:

  • Drive effective health and safety practices within your team
  • Liaise with the Client and our Community partners to ensure solutions that are developed are suitable for buildability and maintainability
  • Lead on the delivery of scheme design, as well as providing support to the Design Team Leader within the design team on various design duties including:
    • Surveys/Inspections
    • Feasibility and other technical reports
    • Planning, programming and cost estimation
    • Design production
    • Production of design schedules
    • Reviewing and amending design drawings
    • Production of Specifications
    • Supporting development of Graduate Engineers and Technicians
  • Work to programme to deliver specified designs on time
  • Prepare technical reports (e.g. Feasibility/Options Reports, Assessment Reports and other technical reports)
  • Represent the business stream in multi-disciplined project teams 
  • Assist in the preparation and monitoring of the budget for projects including the planning, monitoring and reporting of project resources 
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with the client and other relevant stakeholders

  • Ensure innovation and best practice is highlighted and adopted where practicable
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant technical standards
  • Carry out site surveys, inspections and supervision of junior colleagues on site
  • Keep up to date with your own personal development to ensure the natural growth of the team


We want to hear from you if:

  • You have a Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject
  • You have Chartered or Incorporated status held with an appropriate professional body
  • You are an accredited trainer with a relevant professional institution, e.g. Delegated Engineer for the Institution of Civil Engineers
  • You can demonstrate developed experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, probably gained in a Civil Engineer role or equivalent
  • You are able to demonstrate an ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
  • You are experienced in undertaking project related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations Technical report writings skills and associated knowledge
  • You are experienced in the application of technical governance procedures within a consulting engineering environment
  • You have knowledge of technical governance procedures and how they are applied within a consulting engineering environment
  • You have the ability to lead design on schemes with support from Graduates and Assistant Engineers
  • You have the ability to solve problems in collaboration with the Client and other stakeholders
